Santana

The emblematic "little houses of Santana" have become widely recognized nationally and internationally due to their unique architecture. With a triangular shape and thatched covers, these buildings are the most representative symbol of this municipality located on the north coast of the island of Madeira.

These typical houses reflect the isolation that characterized this region, which for a long time was difficult to access both by land and sea. This isolation contributed to the preservation of unique cultural characteristics, which today represent a legacy of great value for this municipality, which is home to about 8800 inhabitants.

With an area of 96.2 km², Santana is composed of six parishes: Arco de São Jorge, Faial, Ilha, Santana, São Jorge and São Roque do Faial. Here you will find attractions such as the Madeira Theme Park, the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve and the highest point of the archipelago, Pico Ruivo.

In 2011, Santana was distinguished by UNESCO as a "Biosphere Reserve", thus becoming an ideal place to enjoy a vast and well-preserved natural heritage. The Biosfera hiking trails, with more than 120 km, are the best way to explore this natural wealth.
