The municipality of Ponta do Sol covers an area of 43.3 km² and is home to about 8,200 inhabitants. In addition to the parish of Ponta do Sol, the municipality also includes the parishes of Canhas and Madalena do Mar.

One of the natural landmarks of this municipality is Paul da Serra, the only plateau on the island, located at an altitude of 1500 meters. This place is known for its vast natural heritage, with nuclei of indigenous vegetation.
