Machico

To find the origins of human occupation of Madeira, it is necessary to explore the History of Machico. It was here that, in July 1419, Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira disembarked during the discovery of the island, giving this municipality a special symbolism for all Madeirans.

There is, however, a legend that narrates that, a century before this historical event, the English lady Anne d'Arfet and the legendary knight Robert Machim, from the court of King Edward III of England, would have found refuge in this place. Machico was named in honor of Machim.

Currently, the municipality is home to about 20 thousand inhabitants in an area of 68 km², divided into five parishes: Água de Pena, Caniçal, Machico, Porto da Cruz and part of Santo António da Serra. Much of this region offers stunning views of the Atlantic.

Machico offers several attractions for visitors. The city's elegant bay is perfect for a walk by the sea, where you can enjoy the crystal clear waters that bathe the municipality. In addition, this municipality, rich in cultural traditions, has a variety of viewpoints, historical monuments, beaches and green spaces.
