São Vicente

The municipality of São Vicente is home to a vast area of the Laurissilva, considered the most valuable natural treasure of the archipelago. The diversity of flora and fauna of this forest, combined with its excellent state of conservation, makes São Vicente one of the best places to explore Madeiran nature through its varied pedestrian paths, often with the ocean as a backdrop.

The green landscape of this region is also shaped by the action of volcanic forces and the erosion of its slopes. Here, you can visit the famous volcanic caves, formed around 890,000 years ago, offering an impressive testimony to the geological history of the island. With so many attractions, the municipality of São Vicente deserves to be discovered.

Another striking point of interest is the chapel of São Vicente, also known as the chapel of Calhau. This small and peculiar chapel was built inside a basalt rock by the sea, symbolizing the region's deep connection to faith and the ubiquitous volcanic rock.

Currently, the municipality of São Vicente is home to about 6000 inhabitants, spread over three parishes: Boaventura, Ponta Delgada and São Vicente. With a total area of 78.70 km², this region is dominated by lush landscapes, where the forest predominates.
